SUPAXIN B contains Polymyxin B which belongs to the group of medicines called Antibiotics. It is used to treat certain forms of serious bacterial infections when other antibiotics are not suitable. It is used to treat infections of the urinary tract (Ex. urinary tract infections), brain (Ex. meningeal infections) or blood (Ex. bacteremia) caused by susceptible gram-negative bacteria such as Aerobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae or Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Polymyxin B is a polypeptide antibiotic. It binds to the susceptible bacteria and disrupts the composition (lipids and protein) of the bacterial cell membrane. As a result, it makes the contents of the bacterial cell to leak out which subsequently leads to bacterial killing. It may also inactivate the toxins produced by the bacteria.

SUPAXIN B should be used only under constant medical supervision. It is very important to complete the full course of therapy with SUPAXIN B to achieve the maximum benefits. Therefore receive SUPAXIN B regularly as instructed by your doctor. Failure to complete the full course of therapy or skipping doses in between the therapy may make the bacteria more resistant against SUPAXIN B.

Before receiving SUPAXIN B inform your doctor if you have any kidney problems. Your doctor will carefully monitor your kidney functions during treatment with SUPAXIN B to avoid the risk of side effects.

Also, inform your doctor if you are already taking any antibiotics (such as bacitracin, colistin, neomycin, amikacin, cephalosporins, streptomycin, kanamycin, gentamicin, tobramycin, paromomycin or viomycin) before receiving SUPAXIN B as a precaution.

There is no proper information regarding the use of SUPAXIN B in pregnant or breastfeeding women. Therefore, inform your doctor before receiving SUPAXIN B if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or breastfeeding.
